They were prisoners made to supervise forced labor by SS soldiers.

Answer: In the story "Night" by Elie Wiesel, the Kapos were prisoners in the concentration camps that cooperated with the SS officers. The Kapos were in charge of the work units in the camp.

The Kapos were still prisoners, but they reported to the officers and even committed acts of violence against other prisoners in order to receive preferential treatment.
