It was unnecessary because the treaty of Ghent, which ended the war, had been signed two weeks earlier.

Because the United States and England had signed the Treaty of ghent in Europe in December of 1814 ending the war of 1812, The news of the treaty didn't reach the U.S in time to stop this battle.
