Here are several events that could've turned the tide in  secessionists favor:
- The convention in Richmond which resulted in Virginia dropping out from the union
- Continous and pointless debates from the delegate
- The fall of fort summter, when Lincoln ordered 
75,000 troops to put down the insurrection
