One basically can not play their luck. He messed with the monkey paw to play his life and wish what he wanted. Everything happens for a reason. You simply cant make things happen your way or they go wrong, life isn't meant to be fair
When he went against fate it means that what he had in store for him to happen changed for the worst and he shouldn't have done that.
