Why do you think most smaller Caribbean countries were able to gain independence peacefully?

The cost of maintaining the smaller countries was relatively high ( the colonizing countries had to send ships very far!) and the benefit comparatively low (less land to plant on)- so they weren't as important for the colonial powers as for example Mexico.
