The cold weather was very harsh that year. Since Napoleon's troops weren't prepared for the bitter cold, they were forced into retreat. This was the French Army's first major defeat under Napoleon. In about 130 years, Adolf Hitler's troops committed the same mistakes and had to retreat, too.
