The first thing to do is to make the denominators.  Since 3 goes into 6, the first fraction should simply be doubled:
1/3 + 5/6 = 2/6 + 5/6
5 + 2 = 7
7/6

1/3 + 5/6 = 1 1/6 or 7/6
