would be the middle number so 18 +19+20+21+22 = 100

 since you want it to be less than 100 use 17 instead of 22

so you have 17 +18+19+20+21 = 95

95 is the maximum sum
x+x+2+x+4+x+6+x+8  < 100
5x + 20 < 100
5x < 80
x < 16

so the 5 numbers are 14,16,18,20,22  and  maximum sum  = 90
