The Crown technically
retained ultimate authority over the colony, although local governance, both
through crown-appointed officials and locally elected representatives,
exercised general autonomy over the colony’s daily affairs. The Puritans sought
to base their communities around their religion, and their laws were strongly
intertwined with Christianity. This means that they were not proponents of separation
of church and state.
