How were the dutch different in the way they treated their colonies?

They were different than others insofar that they didn't try to convert the locals to Christianity or change their ways of life or impact their culture and things like that. They would rule the lands but the people could behave like they would normally do, as long as they knew who was in charge and didn't question it.
