Because if it is sedimentary, giving it an age may decrease the value to the owner. Sedimentary things usually are collectibles or things people have gotten in the past and have taken to remember. Therefore, assigning an age to it may make the person think it's not as valuable as it was before, because in the moment we all need to ask ourselves, "Were we thinking about its age at the time we collected it?".
