During the Tokugawa shogunate, which existed from 1603 to 1868, this was a period where the daimyo had more influence over the Emperor than any other previous period in Japanese history. The emperor was a symbolic figure and had no power over the administrative affairs of the country. However, in order to keep close ties with the imperial clan, the Tokugawa family rebuilt their palaces and granted them new lands.
