Basically 500 something people get to elect the president whether the people want them or not. For example Clinton won the popular vote by over 1 million, but Trump won the electoral vote and became president. Each state has a set number of electors who vote for president and some are bound by state law to vote for whoever wins that state. You need at least 270 electoral votes to become president
