What would a drummer do to make the sound of a drum give a note of lower pitch?

A drummer would loosen the drum skin in order to make the sound of a drum give a note of lower pitch.
However, I am not entirely sure.

Hitting it in the middle will make a lower pitch. Hitting in the corner will make a higher pitch.
