According to Beardsley and Lane Beardsley we should look at our ordinary beliefs critically to find out if they are philosophical.  The authors saw the benefit of philosophy as a study that helps us establish how reasonable our ordinary beliefs are.

Although, our beliefs come from society, and are sometimes adopted from people around us as we grow up, they are not necessarily reasonable. Philosophical beliefs, however must be reasonable.
