Myelin can be described as a layer, composed of fatty acids and proteins, present around the nerves. It is often described as the fatty insulating sheath.  The most important function of the myelin sheath is to enhance the rate at which nerve impulses travel in the body.

If the myelin sheath is damaged or destroyed, then the response action to the bug would be slow and late, as nerve impulses will take more time to travel.
