UNICEF (The United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund) was created on December 11, 1946 by the General Assembly in order to provide assistance to children in countries devastated by WWII. By 1950, its mission had changed in order to focus on children and their mothers in the developing world. Nowadays, its official name is United Nations Children's Fund, although the acronym remains the same.
