In what ways were the Mayan civilization and Aztec Empire similar?

Both the Mayas and Mexicas (correct name for the Aztecs) shared the same religious source, the more ancient religion of Teotihuacan. Also, they started out their empires by conquering their neighbor kingdoms (imposing them tributes and taxes) and continued their expansion to the extent of their military capacity.
