The use of imagery in this text helps us (readers) to imagine the sights and smells of the soldiers camouflaging themselves (option C). It tells us how they used leaves on their helmets, they painted their faces with smelly ash -it tells us they became animals, a part of the jungle, so we create an image of a beast/soldier.
