Four times a number increased by six is the same as seven times the number.

Call that number x.

Then rewrite as equation:

4x+6=7x

solve for x

6=3x

2=x

So the number is 2.

Check that 2 is the number by following the original wording, mentally.

Let's take the number as 'x'

4 times the number is 4x

This is increased by 6

We will have to add 6.

... 4x + 6

7 times a number is 7x

... 7x

Both these values are equal.

Hence,

... 4x + 6 = 7x

... 6 = 3x

... x = 2

Hence, the number is 2.
