In 1095 Pope Urban II publicly called for a crusade to aid Eastern Christians and recover the holy lands. Hence the first crusade from 1096 to 1099 succeeded in taking Jerusalem and was the most successful from the European point of view. They established the Crusader States, ruled by Europeans.
When Jerusalem fell in 1099, crusaders massacred Jews, Christians and Muslims alike.
