The cultures of the North of Africa (the Arabic speaking - people, the Berbers and Tuareg)  are separated from the Bantu-speaking South by the desert, named Sahara - this is the correct answer.

Sahara is very difficult and dangerous to cross, and it has kept the two parts of the continent separated.
