The citizens and soldiers felt secure and thought that no
one would dare raid their town. However,
Villa and his marauders swept early in the morning and caught everyone by
surprise. Many citizens were killed and
injured as his men raid Camp Furlong and Columbus. The Americans launched a counterattack and
drove Villa and his men out killing many of them in the process. This led to a campaign by U.S. troops to hunt
Villa and men down.
