Let the number be y.

One third of y = (1/3)*y = y/3

This is decreased by 6;         y/3  - 6

And it equals 8

That means:

y/3 - 6 = 8

y/3 = 8 + 6

y/3 = 14

y = 3*14

y = 42

The number is 42.

I hope this helps.
